My teenager is about to start driving, what do I do?
State Law requires all drivers to have automobile insurance, this includes teenagers.
Do I add my teenager to my policy or should they get their own policy?
This really depends on which car they will be driving, and who owns the vehicle.
If your teenager is going to be driving your car, then they can be covered under your auto policy once they have been added to the policy. If your teenager has their own vehicle, but your name is on the title, you can still add them to your own auto policy. This is usually less expensive than having them on their own policy.
If your teenager has their own vehicle, and their name is on the title, then they can get their own policy. Although this might be more expensive in the beginning, there are benefits to having them on a separate policy. For example, if they have an accident, then their accident will not be reflected in your auto insurance premium. Plus, this gives them the opportunity to start their own insurance history.
As a parent or guardian, you play a significant role in helping your teenager learn to be responsible when they drive. Take the time to talk with your teenager about the importance of safe driving and how to avoid distracted driving.
You can choose to have different collision and comprehensive deductibles for your teenager than for yourself, even on the same policy. Choosing a higher deductible typically will lower your premium.
Maintaining a clean driving record will help keep your premium lower.
